Google Read and Write Review and Quick Tips

With the Assistive Technology presentation coming up this week I wanted to take a second to review a software that I have been using for a few years.  Google read and write is a software that helps boost reading and writing confidence for students by having tools that help with reading, writing, study skills and assignments. Some of the softwares features are:

• Text-to-speech to hear words, passages, or whole documents read aloud with easy-to-follow dual colour highlighting

• Text and picture dictionaries to see the meaning of words explained

• With speech-to-text, dictate words to assist with writing, proofreading & studying

• Word prediction offers suggestions for the current or next word as you type

• Collect highlights from text in documents or the web for summarizing and research

• Create and listen to voice notes directly inside of Google Docs

• Simplify and summarize text on web pages to remove ads and other copy that can be distracting

I find read and write very easy to use and can be applied and used in many different ways. This software can and should be embedded into the curriculum as it is a tool that would help all students not just those with disabilities. Please see below a quick tips guide that explains what each button and tool does.
